welcome!

welcome to my first blog. i chose the san francisco zoo as my subject for many reasons, mostly its a place very dear to me and i love all the residents. i'm an sf native, lifelong visitor and member. i have many fond memories of the zoo including the one above, taken at a member's night event many years ago when you could feed the giraffes! it was one of those things that make you just go wow! ... i suffered a huge loss last summer and the zoo was one of the only places i could go and dilute my thoughts for even a handful of moments. spending more time than ever there, i got to know more about the residents from both watching them and chats i'd be lucky to have with keepers. those experiences made my visits richer. i've always loved animals, but now that i know them, most by name, i've come to care even more about them. i have an emotional stake in their lives. my hope with this blog is to familiarize everyone who stops here, with the residents there. i hope feeling like you know them, will not only enrich your visit to the zoo, as it has mine, but increase your interest in its welfare, for the sake of these residents. ... please follow this blog and me (leo811) on twitter for updates! thank you. ... click on the blog title to the left to be taken straight to the most current post! enjoy!

  2. Thank you for sending me into your blog! I enjoy the SF Zoo too! I am a member too

I went to a former donor's memorial at her home and met with some retired SF Zoo employees (one was the primates keeper). He told me about the orangatangs. The keepers couldn't figure out how they get out to the grotto before they open the gates. So, the keeper slept in their keep (unbeknowest to them) and found that they can figure out the lock system of the gates It's pretty intricate and yet they figured the slots and bars opening in unison Thus, they had to change the slot/lock system

  4. Hi! Received your email and was delighted to receive your latest pic! I posted anon but it's me Momsie.

I try not to get too close to some of the critters there as the SF Zoo either sells or trade their animals to other zoos or organizations. My heart would break if I couldn't see my fav anymore. The funding is scarce and most times, i.e., giraffes (males) are sold.

  6. hi momsie! thankx for the post. yea its tough when an animal leaves or passes away. when you get to know them, their names and personalities its a real sad thing, but getting to know them is a joy during the time we have them. i don't think i would distance myself for something that might happen in the future. i would miss out on them in the present. :)
